Music City Center Houses 100,00 Bees On Roof
It's definitely a step in the right direction as far as the Music City Center's sustainability initiative. Personally, I think more urban areas should do this provided it is done correctly. Hope the bees thrive and do well. Way to go, Nashville!!
We eagerly picked up a new package of bees on April 18th, from the great people at Wolf Creek Apiaries, in Centerville, Tennessee. After a pleasant country drive to their bee farm, we grabbed our three pound box of bees and headed back to our farm to introduce them to their new hive. Nash was intent on keeping close guard on our new friends and made sure to keep the bees company by talking to them on the trip home. We discussed everything a five-year old would find fascinating about honey bees. It was a very enjoyable drive talking about the bees' importance and significance in our world, along with each bee's role as either a queen, worker or drone, and how the bees are able to create their wax, combs and honey.
After arriving back at our farm, I got to work on carefully unpacking them and placing them in their new hive. I gave them a light spraying of sugar water to allow them to gorge on the syrup and stay relatively calm before taking out the queen cage (seen in the middle photo above). I made sure to remove the cork cap and replace it with a marshmallow so that the workers would be eager to help get their queen out of her holding cage. I placed the box of bees in an empty frame box, put the top feeder (filled with a ratio of 1:1 water and sugar) on, then the inner and outer covers were secured...the approximately 10,000 bees were now good to go in their new home!
